Outreach

Across the state of Texas, there are approximately 7,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing children. While TSD is mandated by the Texas legislature to serve as the educational resource for these children, TSD’s outreach program receives less than 2% of state funds appropriated to the school. Through careful use of these allocated funds, as well as awarded federal grants, the outreach department manages to provide support, resources and programs statewide to children who are deaf and hard of hearing, as well as their families, and the professionals who serve them (teachers, counselors, interpreters, medical personnel, etc). TSDF works hard to supplement these efforts and has provided additional funding to:

  • sign language support
  • pediatric hearing tests (ages 0–4)
  • educational summer camps
  • online teaching materials and curricula
  • distance learning
  • parent/family support
  • training and technical assistance for professionals
